CASE STUDY

Facility Upgrade at Vegetable Production Sites

Morrisons are the UK’s 2nd largest fresh food manufacturer with 18 sites across the country. To ensure they continue to offer fresh food at great value, they sought to develop efficient and labour reducing facilities at their root vegetable production site in Flaxby.

The Challenge

Morrisons were looking to up-grade a former potato store to increase capacity. Protolan were required to procure, install and commission a new carrot washing, grading & sorting line to fulfil requirements.

Delivering Success

To ensure the successful installation of all equipment, phased plans were put in place to allow for safe and efficient installation. During the project it was imperative that the site remained fully operational for all line relocations and construction work. Throughout the project, Protolan drove effective communication with the site team and project team and utilised steering group format for out of scope decision making. We worked closely with contractors and encouraged them to work together efficiently to achieve client expectations. Elements of the project included: • Site clearance and sale of redundant equipment • Relocation of several existing lines • Up-grade to the building including new walls, drainage, services and steelwork • Effective segregation of ‘dirty’ and ‘washed’ carrots through efficient design • Optical grading to remove quality rejects and size sorting • New high humidity store for sorted product storage Morrisons required that all work was in place and functional for peak Christmas volume, which was achieved.
